That sounds reasonable. It's trying to stop you from doing something daft. You can only use an extended device as an extended storage device.
What is it you want to do?
If you're trying to copy your game save data, bung a USB stick into a spare USB slot and use the copy from online storage option.

PS4 won't rebuild database
I already unplugged and replugged it with 30 minutes+ gap each time and now each time (after trying, it won't boot into safe mode, it's beeping twice, but shortly after the second beep it pings and turns off, idk if i'm doing it wrong)
I already took it to a repair shop because it was doing it before and it worked fine for them, so they couldn't fix it, it just doesn't work on my end, we got a new hdmi cable too, and that made no difference whatsoever, idk what to do now to be honest, nothing is fixing the problem, I don't want to initialize it (because I have a significant amount of save-data on it for a game)

Controllers not charging
I have the same problem.
Both my controllers won't charge. Last time I used them, a couple of month ago, there wasn't any problem.
In my case, I don't think the console is the issue, because I experience the same thing when trying to charge the controllers through my mobile charger (it worked before).
Also, I don't think the controllers are the issue, because both controllers charged just fine last time I recharged them. But on the other hand, I could just be really unlucky and both controllers break at the same time?

PS4 System Software Update v4.73 [02/08/17]
Once I updated my system, buttons don't work when i select to use my streaming subscriptions. I've done the initialize reboot, it worked once and now it continues to not allow me to use ANY buttons once i enter my streaming channel.

Check the USB Cables, I was having the same problem, And I just change the USB Cable and the controllers where charging again just fine

Ever since the 4.73 install netflix app freezes and runs on a serious lag. rebuild database not working. netflix tech svc added that ps4 firmware update giving others the same problem. what is being done to fix this?

Metro redux ps4 shutting down by itself
Ran into this same very issue today.
Research shows Injustice 2, MKX and Darksiders 2 are all affected.
Many other games I have run fine for hours.
I take it nobody knows if it affects all Slims, or if it's hardware or software related.
Hopefully latter with Sony to patch it out, I wouldn't want to trade my Slim in for a Fat PS4.

As far as I know from Reinhard, Sony have now acquired a problem console and are testing it for themselves to determine what the next step will be. If its as bad as we all think it is then at a minimum I would say a mass product recall. But if they get their tech wizards onto it then it MAY be a patchable thing. It just depends how deep the problem rabbit hole goes once they've found out what the issue actually is.

Cant create or join parties
Yeah I'm having problems seeing notifications of people inviting me to parties, joining parties because none show up on the party screen and creating parties. Whenever I try and create a party it says an error has occurred.(NP-39225-1). I also can't get online and play any of my online games. The only thing that I can do is get on the PlayStation Store. I've tried restarting my PlayStation multiple times and I have also tried resetting my router and it hasn't helped I've also tried getting out of my network connection and getting back into it multiple times which also hasn't helped it says that I have internet whenever I try the connection at the very end of resetting up my network and I checked my software version and I have 4.3 which I think is the newest update for my software. I don't understand what's going on but my mom is having the same problems and our Internet's doing just fine.
